My name is Lila, and I have lived in the San Luis Valley for a total of 35 years. I was born and raised in the Valley but left after college and returned in 2000. I love my job of being retired!!
I really love the spring and fall times of the area. The spring is great because everything starts to turn green again. The fall is a great time to visit because of all the fall colors in the mountains. I love going for drives to see the trees turning colors.
Every year I look forward to the Ski Hi Stampede. The parade is my favorite, and I attend all 3 days. I also enjoy the rodeo.
First time visitors to the Valley must take time to see the Great Sand Dunes and the town of Creede. I love the sand dunes because I can see them from my backdoor. I also love the diversity where it goes from desert to tall 14,000 foot mountains.
Creede is great as it is like taking a step back in time. I love the history of the town. The Creede Repertory Theatre is amazing and well worth your time.
If you had only a day and had to choose between the Great Sand Dunes or Creede to see, I would tell you that if you don’t mind sand in your toes to go there, but if you want to stay clean, spend the day in Creede.
I hope you enjoy the San Luis Valley as much as I do!!
